What Happens When
Gutters Back Up
Water that cannot get to the downspout goes somewhere else. Over a Michigan winter that usually means one of three things: it runs down the fascia and rots the board behind the gutter, it overflows against the foundation and finds its way into the basement, or it freezes in the gutter and forms an ice dam that pushes water back up under the shingles.
All three cost considerably more to fix than a gutter cleaning.

Repairs
While we are cleaning your gutters, we can also handle:

- Adding or extending downspout extensions to move water away from the foundation

When to Clean Gutters in Michigan
Twice a year is the standard: once in spring after the seeds and helicopter pods have come down, and once in fall after the leaves have finished.
An important detail to keep in mind is that the leaves here finish much later than most schedules assume. A lot of Michigan oaks and maples hold their leaves well into November and December, which means a gutter cleaned in early October is often full again by the time the first freeze arrives. We clean gutters through the end of the year for exactly this reason.
If you are under heavy tree cover, and much of Ann Arbor is, you may need a third cleaning in late spring for the seed drop.

Most gutter cleanings are $150 to $300. Cost depends on the length of the gutter run, the number of stories, roof pitch, and how much debris is actually up there.
Repairs are quoted separately once we have seen what is needed, and we will always tell you before doing anything beyond the cleaning.
Common Questions
Do you clean gutters with gutter guards?
Yes, though it takes longer because guards have to come off and go back on. Guards reduce how much gets in, but almost none of them eliminate cleaning entirely, particularly with pine needles and maple seeds.
Will you get on the roof?
Where the roof allows it safely, yes. A lot of gutter work is done from a ladder, which is safer for both the crew and your shingles.
Can you do it in winter?
We clean through December most years, weather depending. Once gutters are frozen solid there is nothing useful to be done until they thaw, so earlier is better.
Do you haul the debris away?
Yes. It gets bagged and it leaves with us. We do not blow it into your beds.
