Two Very Different Ypsilantis

Washing houses here means handling two very different kinds of building, often in the same week.

North and west of downtown, in Depot Town, Normal Park, College Heights and around West Cross, much of the housing dates to the early 1900s. Painted wood siding, original trim, porches with turned spindles, and in the historic districts, materials that will not survive being blasted. These houses need a soft wash and a slow hand.

South and east, through Ypsilanti Township and the newer subdivisions off Textile, Whittaker and Munger, the stock is much newer and mostly vinyl. Vinyl is more forgiving, but it also grows algae readily on the shaded sides, and it is the surface most likely to be damaged by somebody applying too much pressure and forcing water up behind the seams.
